Zumba Frequently Asked Questions in Singapore
In this blog article, I am going to answer some of the Zumba Frequently Asked Questions in Singapore.
TOP 10 Zumba Frequently Asked Questions in Singapore
Question 1. What is a typical Zumba class like?
Zumba is a one-hour fitness class depending on the principle of period training – switching high intensity and lower intensity exercise which works for both beginners and advanced exercisers. In Zumba, changes in power are driven by the various rhythms of the music and the steps - without the negative effects of high impact workout. Instructors usually start with a warm up, then move through 10-12 routines which vary in intensity and style. Zumba blends traditional dance steps with basic fitness moves so everyone can participate - which is very simple to follow. They normally finish with a cool down and stretching to bring the heart rate down and relax the muscles.
Question 2. I've never done Zumba before. Can beginners participate?
You're not the only one! Yes, Zumba is suitable for both new participants and regular participants. You do not need dance or fitness experience to join a class. The class is designed as a "one size fits all." The routines and steps are simple enough that new participants can simply join while regular members are challenged. And, of course, you are always welcome to alter the workout to suit your needs. You know your body best.
Question 3. Is Zumba usually only for people with a dance background?
Absolutely no, you don't need a dance background to enjoy Zumba. No doubt having a dance background helps you look more together when you are doing it and people with dance background pick up the steps a bit faster, BUT it is not limited to dancers. Zumba is not too difficult to follow. It is perfectly OK if you cannot keep up 100% with the instructor or your dancemates. Continue to move & enjoy the music! The key is to HAVE FUN!
Question 4. What are the health benefits of Zumba?
Prepare to perspire and burn between 400 - 1000 calories!
Zumba could possibly get your heart pumping, improve your endurance and reflexes - you'll have more energy and lose fat. The moves will work your core (abs, back and hips), biceps and triceps and lower limbs to strengthen and boost them. Besides the physical benefits, Zumba is a "feel good" workout, not a feared chore - the music is motivating and fun, you'll leave happy! It is a good mental break from our busy lives - time for yourself, which we all need! Certainly, results vary by individual and depend on diet and frequency of exercise, but you may well be pleasantly surprised by the scales, the reflection, by how much better your clothes fit, and especially by how much more energy you have!
Question 5. Is Zumba a dance or a workout? Why are the steps so repetitive?
It is a Latin dance inspired exercise routine (it's an exercise routine, not a proper dance performance, hence the repetitive movements) - so it's a mixture of both dance and workout. It is something similar to aerobics, but 10 times more fun!
Question 6. Do I have to be in good shape to do Zumba?
Not at all. There are all age groups in the same class with every capability level possible. The cool thing about Zumba is you only work as hard as you want to. Two people in the same class could do the same steps and one may well not even break a sweat, while the other is drenched. Cannot handle high impact? No problem, your instructor should always demonstrate it slowly. Need a break? That is fine too. Just march on the spot or do your own thing until you’re ready to get back at it.
Question 7. But I am not coordinated and I don’t want to look silly 🙁
Ignore that! Everyone is too busy stressing about what they are doing to see what you are up to! Besides, coordination is merely one aspect of fitness – something that needs to be trained just like strength and flexibility. The good news? Coordination can be trained easily – give Zumba (or any other workout like Step or Kickboxing) a try for 10 classes and I promise your coordination will improve considerably. Zumba is not about learning to dance or perfection. It's simply about moving and having fun. There is no right or wrong in class, and it is a very safe environment.
Question 8. Will Zumba help me lose weight?
The short answer – yes. The long answer – as with any weight lose plan you will need to pair exercise with healthy eating in over to achieve long term weight loss. I know many, many people who have lost a considerable amount of weight doing Zumba, and I know lots who don’t lose weight at all. Like I said above, you only get out of it what you put into it.
Question 9. What should I wear and bring with me?
Dress in comfortable workout clothes, and wear runners with good support. If you own dance-fitness or jazz joggers, those work effectively for class. However, they are not compulsory to do the class. Please do not wear slippers or any type of shoe that does not offer support. Although we are dancing, Zumba is also a fitness class so you require support for your feet. We also ask you wear runners that do not leave scratch marks on the floor. If you want, you can bring a towel to wipe off sweat. Of course, remember to bring lots of water!
